Sedation Dentistry Calgary

Feel relaxed with your treatment.

At Brentwood Village Dental Clinic, we strive to make each of our patients’ experience as comfortable and relaxed as possible. However, we are also aware that the fear and anxiety associated with a dental visit is quite common. Our dental team is trained to recognize when a patient feels serious discomfort and approach the situation with care and compassion. IV sedation is a safe option to manage anxiety and make your visit a more pleasant one.

If you have difficulty feeling relaxed in a dentist chair, have a low pain threshold, need a large amount of dental work done in one sitting, have a sensitive gag reflex, or have had previous traumatic dental experiences, call us today to discuss IV sedation. We will work together to ease the stress so you can enjoy healthy teeth and gums for life.

Our IV Sedation Services

Often referred to as “Conscious Sedation” I.V.

Dr. Amreesh Khanna is available for I.V. Sedation procedures at the Brentwood Village Dental Clinic on most Wednesdays.

Sedation is a procedure by which the dental patient is put into a state of extreme drowsiness by a combination of pharmaceuticals delivered through an I.V. Patients who are sedated retain the ability to independently and continuously maintain an airway and respond appropriately to physical stimuli and verbal command.

In a dental setting, IV sedation is used to treat patients who are anxious, and would otherwise be unable to endure dental treatment with traditional local anesthetics alone. Once sedated, the anxious patient is no longer bothered by dental work; the pharmaceuticals provide a sense of calm, well-being—in fact most patients remark on how pleasant an experience it was.

Is it safe? At the Brentwood Village Dental Clinic in Calgary, we are committed to providing the absolute safest dental services possible. During the course of the sedation appointment and for sufficient recovery after, the patient’s blood pressure, blood oxygen level, pulse, heart rhythm, and expired carbon dioxide are constantly monitored. We have hospital grade monitoring equipment which is unsurpassed for patient safety. Dr. Khanna has received advanced training and certification in I.V. Sedation procedures from the Montefiore Medical School at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York.

The cost of I.V. Sedation is $685.00; this cost is separate from the cost of any dental procedures being done while sedated. Some insurance companies will cover a portion of this fee. Patients having I.V. Sedation must fast for a minimum of 8 hours previous to their appointment. This means no eating or drinking anything at all.

IV Sedation FAQs

Our patients report a feeling of deep relaxation and even a pleasant experience with IV sedation. While you relax in our dentist chair, our team can complete dental work more efficiently. When administered by our qualified and trained dentist, IV sedation is done in a controlled setting with the right amount of dosage. It’s a proven method that is effective with even the most severe dental phobias.

Before considering IV sedation for your dental appointment, you will need to consult with your dentist first to ensure that you are a candidate. If you are approved, your dentist will give you instructions on certain foods, alcohol, and medication to avoid before your appointment. In any case, we will find a solution to make your visit as comfortable as possible!

During your appointment, we’ll walk you through the steps and won’t start any treatments until you are fully relaxed and ready. IV sedation is gentle enough that you will be conscious and able to respond to your dentist while strong enough to make you feel calm.

We ask that you bring a friend or family member to your appointment who can safely drive you home after your appointment.

IV sedation lasts for as long as the procedure takes. The tube that is inserted into your vein remains there throughout the dental treatment and is only taken out once the procedure is over.

No, patients do not feel any pain under IV sedation.

Yes, oral sedation is used to help patients feel more comfortable and relaxed during a dental procedure. While sedation can help the majority of patients with mild to moderate levels of anxiety, it may not be as effective for patients with higher levels of anxiety.

Using a needle, a tube is inserted into your vein, typically at the top of your hand, where the sedative drug is administered through. The sedation travels into your bloodstream and the effects allow you to feel more relaxed. Although you are still conscious, you are in what we call a “twilight sleep” where you are less aware of your surroundings. Your pulse and oxygen levels are monitored throughout the process.

Yes, patients typically feel groggy and loopy with IV sedation after a wisdom teeth procedure.

Dental implants are typically performed under local anesthesia, however, patients can request conscious sedation or even general anesthesia (where the patient is asleep throughout the procedure) if they are feeling fearful or anxious.

You can expect to feel sleepy, groggy, and loopy after sedation. Once the procedure is complete, you’ll be monitored for your oxygen and blood pressure levels before being discharged.

Typically, the effects of IV sedation last for about 12 hours and the effects wear off after 24 hours.
